The Surface of the Mars:

 

It is most interesting to find ourselves in the position of being able to study the surface of Mars, an extraterrestrial planet, which has experienced a vast period of its history so very different from that of the Earth that many of the factors in terrestrial analysis have to be discarded at each and every step when looking at the detailed items we can now see on the surface of Mars.

Many people are presenlty studying all the many thousands of images of Mars that are now avaialabel, courtesy of the Mars landers, so I will talk about some of the elementary observations that form the basis of Geological study in relation to the images below.

Topsoil to core:

 

The first little principle of geological process that I ever learned of concerned the particles that make up topsoil.

Whilst hill walking with my father I had noticed a small feature that occurred on the slopes of fells with short grass, those typically grazed by sheep.
